The
ability to determine soil physical properties on
cohesive materials is often something that is tested
in a civil laboratory. Now it is possible to accurately
assess undrained soil shear strength by using the
Geovane.
The Geovane is a handheld, portable and easily used
piece of field equipment that will enable geotechnical
engineers and field staff to provide accurate and meaningful
results of shear strength in the pressure units of
kilopascal (kPa).
If used correctly the Geovane will also measure residual shear strength of cohesive
soils (ie clays and silts).
